Working with Australian Clients: What Every Filipino VA Needs to Know

Australia is the single largest market for Filipino Virtual Assistants. Australian businesses — particularly small and medium-sized businesses — have embraced remote Filipino VAs enthusiastically, and the relationship works well for both sides. But cultural differences between Filipino and Australian work culture can create friction if you are not prepared for them. Here is what you need to know.

Australian Communication Style

Australians are direct communicators. They say what they mean and expect you to do the same. This can feel blunt or even rude to Filipinos who are accustomed to more indirect, face-saving communication styles. It is not rudeness — it is efficiency. When an Australian client says "this is not quite right," they mean it literally and expect you to fix it, not to apologize extensively.

Equally important: Australians expect you to speak up when you do not understand something, when you disagree with an approach, or when you cannot meet a deadline. Saying "yes" to everything and then delivering late or incorrectly is one of the fastest ways to lose an Australian client. They would much rather hear "I am not sure I understand — can you clarify?" than receive work that misses the brief.

Time Zones: The Practical Reality

Australia has three main time zones: AEST (UTC+10), ACST (UTC+9:30), and AWST (UTC+8). The Philippines is UTC+8, which means:

  • Sydney/Melbourne (AEST): Philippines is 2 hours behind
  • Adelaide (ACST): Philippines is 1.5 hours behind
  • Perth (AWST): Philippines is the same time zone

The overlap between Philippine business hours and Australian business hours is actually quite good — much better than working with US clients. A 9am–5pm AEST workday corresponds to 7am–3pm Philippine time, which is entirely workable without sacrificing your evenings.

Australian Business Culture

A few key cultural points that Filipino VAs often find surprising about Australian clients:

  • Informality: Australians are generally informal in their communication. First names are used immediately, and a casual, friendly tone is normal even in professional settings. Do not be overly formal — it can come across as stiff.
  • Punctuality: Meetings start on time. If you are going to be late to a call, message ahead of time. Showing up 5 minutes late without notice is considered disrespectful.
  • Directness about problems: If something is not working, Australian clients will tell you directly. Do not take it personally — take it as useful feedback and fix the issue.
  • Work-life balance: Australians value their personal time. Do not message clients outside of business hours unless it is genuinely urgent. Respect their weekends.

What Australian Clients Value Most in a VA

Based on our experience at Forfos working with Australian clients, the qualities they value most in Filipino VAs are:

  1. Reliability: Doing what you say you will do, when you say you will do it. This is the single most important quality.
  2. Proactiveness: Identifying problems before they become crises, suggesting improvements, and taking initiative without waiting to be asked.
  3. Clear communication: Providing regular updates, asking clarifying questions early, and flagging issues as soon as they arise.
  4. Attention to detail: Catching errors before they reach the client, double-checking work, and maintaining consistent quality.

Getting Paid by Australian Clients

Australian clients typically pay in AUD. The AUD/PHP exchange rate is generally favorable for Filipino VAs — 1 AUD is approximately ₱38–₱42. Payment is usually made via bank transfer, PayPal, or Wise. Wise is the recommended option for receiving AUD payments — it offers the best exchange rates and lowest fees.

Invoice your Australian clients at the agreed frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and include your bank details or Wise account information. Most Australian businesses pay within 7–14 days of receiving an invoice.
